The Fruit of the HOLY SPIRIT

Podcast Episode: The Fruit of the HOLY SPIRIT – GOODNESS #6

“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS, AND SELF-CONTROL. There is no law against these things.” [Galatians 5:22-23 NLT]

We need to understand that love is the first characteristic of the fruit of the Holy Spirit. It is well placed at the head of the list, for it permeates all the rest of the attributes. Somehow, if we live a life of love, the other virtues will attend us all the days of our lives. Love is the key that unlocks the entire fruit basket of Galatians 5:22-23, as well as permeating 1 Corinthians 13.

The Call of Abram

In Genesis 12:1-9 NLT says, “1 The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. 3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.” 4 So Abram departed as the Lord had instructed, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. 5 He took his wife, Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all his wealth – his livestock and all the people he had taken into his household at Haran – and headed for the land of Canaan. When they arrived in Canaan, 6 Abram traveled through the land as far as Shechem. There he set up camp beside the oak of Moreh. At that time, the area was inhabited by Canaanites. 7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your descendants.” And Abram built an altar there and dedicated it to the Lord, who had appeared to him. 8 After that, Abram traveled south and set up camp in the hill country, with Bethel to the west and Ai to the east. There he built another altar and dedicated it to the Lord, and he worshiped the Lord. 9 Then Abram continued traveling south by stages toward the Negev.

The Rich Man

In Luke 18:18-30 NLT says, “18 Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question: “Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “Only God is truly good. 20 But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. Honor your father and mother.’” 21 The man replied, “I’ve carefully obeyed all these commandments since I was young.” 22 When Jesus heard his answer, He said, “There is still one thing you haven’t done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 23 But when the man heard this, he became sad, for he was very rich. 24 When Jesus saw this, He said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God! 25 In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!” 26 Those who heard this said, “Then who in the world can be saved?” 27 He replied, “What is impossible for people is possible with God.” 28 Peter said, “We’ve left our homes to follow you.” 29 “Yes,” Jesus replied, “and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the Kingdom of God, 30 will be repaid many times over in this life, and will have eternal life in the world to come.”

Baruch Reads the Lord’s Messages

In Jeremiah 36:1-7 NLT says, “1 During the fourth year that Jehoiakim son of Josiah was king in Judah, the Lord gave this message to Jeremiah: 2 “Get a scroll, and write down all my messages against Israel, Judah, and the other nations. Begin with the first message back in the days of Josiah, and write down every message, right up to the present time. 3 Perhaps the people of Judah will repent when they hear again all the terrible things, I have planned for them. Then I will be able to forgive their sins and wrongdoings.” 4 So Jeremiah sent for Baruch son of Neriah, and as Jeremiah dictated all the prophecies that the Lord had given him, Baruch wrote them on a scroll. 5 Then Jeremiah said to Baruch, “I am a prisoner here and unable to go to the Temple. 6 So you go to the Temple on the next day of fasting, and read the messages from the Lord that I have had you write on this scroll. Read them so the people who are there from all over Judah will hear them. 7 Perhaps even yet they will turn from their evil ways and ask the Lord’s forgiveness before it is too late. For the Lord has threatened them with His terrible anger.”

Faith Without Good Deeds is Dead

In James 2:14-24 NLT says, “14 What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? 15 Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, 16 and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well” – but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? 17 So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless. 18 Now someone may argue, “Some people have faith; others have good deeds.” But I say, “How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.” 19 You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. 20 How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless? 21 Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete. 23 And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God. 24 So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone.”

In Isaiah 1:1-6 NLT says, “1 These are the visions that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. He saw these visions during the years when Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah were kings of Judah. 2 Listen, O heavens! Pay attention, earth! This is what the Lord says: “The children I raised and cared for have rebelled against me. 3 Even an ox knows its owner, and a donkey recognizes its master’s care – but Israel doesn’t know its master. My people don’t recognize my care for them.” 4 Oh, what a sinful nation they are – loaded down with a burden of guilt. They are evil people, corrupt children who have rejected the Lord. They have despised the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on Him. 5 Why do you continue to invite punishment? Must you rebel forever? Your head is injured, and your heart is sick. 6 You are battered from head to foot – covered with bruises, welts, and infected wounds – without any soothing ointments or bandages.”

Joseph in Potiphar’s House

In Genesis 39:1-10 NLT says, “1 When Joseph was taken to Egypt by the Ishmaelite traders, he was purchased by Potiphar, an Egyptian officer. Potiphar was captain of the guard for Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. 2 The Lord was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master. 3 Potiphar noticed this and realized that the Lord was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did. 4 This pleased Potiphar, so he soon made Joseph his personal attendant. He put him in charge of his entire household and everything he owned. 5 From the day Joseph was put in charge of his master’s household and property, the Lord began to bless Potiphar’s household for Joseph’s sake. All his household affairs ran smoothly, and his crops and livestock flourished. 6 So Potiphar gave Joseph complete administrative responsibility over everything he owned. With Joseph there, he didn’t worry about a thing – except what kind of food to eat! Joseph was a very handsome and well-built young man, 7 and Potiphar’s wife soon began to look at him lustfully. “Come and sleep with me,” she demanded. 8 But Joseph refused. “Look,” he told her, “My master trusts me with everything in his entire household. 9 No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.” 10 She kept putting pressure on Joseph, day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible.”

The Manifestation of the HOLY SPIRIT is on FIRE!

The Faith of a Gentile Woman

In Matthew 15:21-28 NLT says, “21 Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Gentile woman who lived there came to Him, pleading, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! For my daughter is possessed by a demon that torments her severely.” 23 But Jesus gave her no reply, not even a word. Then His disciples urged Him to send her away. “Tell her to go away,” they said. “She is bothering us with all her begging.” 24 Then Jesus said to the woman, “I was sent only to help God’s lost sheep – the people of Israel.” 25 But she came and worshiped Him, pleading again, “Lord, help me!” 26 Jesus responded, “It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.” 27 She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their master’s table.” 28 “Dear woman,” Jesus said to her, “your faith is great. Your request is granted.” And her daughter was instantly healed.”

Let’s meditate and learn about this Gentile woman. Apparently, a woman had heard about our Lord Jesus Christ’s miracle-working power and how He could cast out demons, so she wasn’t going to miss a chance to see Him. The woman called Jesus Lord, Son of David, showing her acceptance of our Lord Jesus Christ’s identity as the Jewish Messiah. She may have been a Greek proselyte. Sometimes Gentiles would convert to Judaism, attracted by its strong moral qualities. This woman came to our Lord Jesus Christ on behalf of her daughter, who was tormented by a demon.

The woman continued to follow after them, and she continued to shout. Finally, the disciples urged our Lord Jesus Christ to tell her to leave. Our Lord Jesus Christ, always compassionate, would heal the woman’s daughter, but not just to make her stop following them. He had a lesson about faith that He needed to teach this woman. In so doing, He would teach the disciples a lesson as well.

Our Lord Jesus Christ’s words do not contradict the truth that God’s message is for all kinds of people (Psalm 22:27; Isaiah 56:7; Matthew 28:19; Romans 15:9-12). After all, when our Lord Jesus Christ said, “I was sent only to help the people of Israel . . . not the Gentiles,” He was in Gentile territory. He ministered to Gentiles on many other occasions (Matthew 4:24-25; 8:5-13).

Our Lord Jesus Christ was simply telling the woman that Jews were to have the first opportunity to accept Him as the Messiah because God wanted them to present the message of salvation to the rest of the world (see Genesis 12:3). While on earth, our Lord Jesus Christ restricted His mission to the people of Israel. He was doing His Father’s will (Matthew 11:27) and fulfilling the promise God made to Jews in the Old Testament. The restricted mission of our Lord Jesus Christ and the disciples echoes the principle recorded in Matthew 10:5-6.

Undaunted by our Lord Jesus Christ’s apparent unwillingness to respond to her request, the woman came and worshiped Him, pleading for help. Our Lord Jesus Christ’s answer comes in the language of a parable; therefore, we must not press the details too far. The simple parable meant that the children at the table should be fed before the pets; it would not be right to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.

By these words, our Lord Jesus Christ may have meant that His first priority was to spend time feeding His children (teaching His disciples), not to take food away from them and throw it to the pets (just anyone). Our Lord Jesus Christ was not insulting the woman; instead, He was saying that she must not demand what God had ordained for the Jews. She should wait until God’s appointed time – when the Gentiles would receive the Good News of the Gospel.

This Gentile woman understood our Lord Jesus Christ’s parable. Her answer was wise, for she explained to our Lord Jesus Christ, by extending His parable, that children often drop morsels of food to their dogs. Not all the Jews accepted our Lord Jesus Christ, while some Gentiles chose to follow Him. Why couldn’t she have some of those crumbs that the Jews didn’t want? She adroitly or quickly and skillfully pointed out that even dogs ate with (not after) the children. She did not ask for the entire meal; she was perfectly willing to take second place behind the Jews. All she wanted right then was a few crumbs – or one “crumb” in particular – one miracle of healing for her daughter.

Our Lord Jesus Christ was delighted by the faith of the woman. He granted her request because of her humility and persistence. She had made her request in faith that our Lord Jesus Christ could perform the healing. She understood our Lord Jesus Christ’s lordship, and she understood the priorities of His mission. No wonder our Lord Jesus Christ exclaimed, “Your faith is great.” On that basis, our Lord Jesus Christ healed the woman’s daughter.

Our Lord Jesus Christ did not consider the woman inferior just because she was a Gentile, although that was the way most Jews of our Lord Jesus Christ’s day thought of Gentiles. Prejudice blocks the way of those who would like to practice the Golden Rule. There was an old Jewish prayer that said, “God, I thank thee that I am neither a Gentile, a dog, nor a woman.” Obviously, this prayer was not popular with dogs, Gentiles, or women.

In this passage, our Lord Jesus Christ reminds this Canaanite woman that He is a “Jewish Messiah” sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” It isn’t right,” said our Lord Jesus Christ, “to take the doctrinal bread of authentic, theological Judaism and give it to the dogs (non-Jewish people.” “Yes,” said the woman, “but even dogs are welcome to eat the crumbs that fall from the table.” Impressed by the woman’s faith, our Lord Jesus Christ healed her daughter.

Kindness is listening to the hurting even if they are not our kind, or even if they don’t adhere to our true religion (Christianity – a way of life of relationship). Kindness is applying the Golden Rule to all – even those beyond our sociological or ethnic circle. “Do to others what you would have them to do to you” (Matthew 7:12) is the key to a majestic kindness that changes the world. Amen!

Somehow, if we live a life of love, the other virtues will attend us all the days of our lives. Love is the key that unlocks the entire fruit basket of Galatians 5:22-23, as well as permeating 1 Corinthians 13.

David to Abigail – Blessed be the Lord God of Israel

In 1 Samuel 25:32-34 NLT says, “32 David replied to Abigail, “Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you to meet me today! 33 Thank God for your good sense! Bless you for keeping me from murder and from carrying out vengeance with my own hands. 34 For I swear by the Lord, the God of Israel, who has kept me from hurting you, that if you had not hurried out to meet me, not one of Nabal’s men would still be alive tomorrow morning.”

One of the unique characteristics of the Hebrew faith was the conviction that God was at work in the common events of life as well as the extraordinary. David, as he shows here, had a remarkable, built-in faith in the living, acting God. Insulted and angered by Nabal, he had been on the eve of perpetrating a crime. Abigail’s timely speech has changed his mind, bringing him to his senses.

David blesses Abigail for her good judgment and for keeping him from bloodshed when he was in a mood for self-willed vengeance. Kindness is a virtue that sometimes arrives only after we have enjoyed being as mad as we really wanted to be for as long as wanted to be.

Abigail reminded David that vengefully killing our enemies is not a measure of the kindness of God. Martin Luther wrote that Jesus’ kindness is but God’s approach to grace and that we would do well to emulate our Lord Jesus Christ’s kindness.

Our Lord Jesus Christ gives us faith with all its benefits, and we are to give our neighbor love with all its benefits. We may ask then what are the good works that we should do for our neighbor. They have no name. Just as the good works, which our Lord Jesus Christ has done for us, have no name, they have no name for this reason, lest they be divided and this done and that left undone. Rather, we must give ourselves to our neighbor utterly, just as Christ did not confine Himself to prayer and fasting for us …

So, this is not our good work, that we should give alms or pray, but rather that we should give ourselves entirely to our neighbor, as he/she needs and as we can, with alms, prayer, fasting, counsel, comfort, teaching, appeal, reproof, pardon, clothes, food, and also suffering and death on his/her behalf. But tell me, where in all Christendom are such works?

Luther was asking where kindness exists in our world. It is noticeably infrequent. Where are the “Abigails” who stay our hands and tempers and beg us to be kind to our enemies? Wouldn’t such kindness make a place for God’s grace in a world that is looking to be loved and finding very few lovers? Yes! Amen!

The Manifestation of the HOLY SPIRIT is on FIRE!

Be Ye Angry, and Sin Not

In Ephesians 4:26-27 NLT says, “26 And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 for anger gives a foothold to the devil.”

Another characteristic of the old nature that has to be put off is bad temper, or a lifestyle characterized by anger. The words, don’t sin by letting anger gain control over you, are quoted from Psalm 4:4. The Bible doesn’t tell us that we shouldn’t feel angry, but it points out that it is important to handle our anger properly. We must not indulge our angry feelings or let them lead to pride, hatred, or self-righteousness. Our Lord Jesus Christ became angry at the merchants in the Temple, but this was righteous anger and did not lead Him to sin. B

orn-Again Christian believers must follow our Lord Jesus Christ’s example. We ought to reserve our anger for when we see God dishonored or people wronged. If we get angry, we must do so without sinning. To do this, we should deal with our anger before the sun goes down. According to Deuteronomy, sunset was the time by which wrongs against God and against others should be made right (Deuteronomy 24:13, 15). Anger that is allowed to smolder and burn over time can eventually burst into flame and give a mighty foothold to the Devil, causing people to sin as they become bitter and resentful. It is so much better to deal with the situation immediately; perhaps the previous admonition to lovingly speak the truth can solve the problem.

Kindness is the hallmark of God’s control of our lives. People who have submitted themselves to God’s control exhibit this grace. What is the evidence of kindness in life? Kind people are interruptible. They can stop what they are doing and care for others. Our Lord Jesus Christ biography appears sometimes a haphazard or all over the place hodgepodge, mixture, or assortment of good deeds. Why is this so when He came to establish the kingdom of God? Because our Lord Jesus Christ’s compassion allowed Him to be interrupted by the needs of others, His great heart of kindness could not pass by anyone’s call for help. So, He establishes the kingdom, but never by being unkind to the needy that thronged about Him throughout His ministry.

The world is looking for kindness. When people see our lives of openness and accessibility, then God opens a door for us to minister to them. In fact, kindness paves the way for our service. Kindness brings God close to those who need Him. Amen!

Even when we prepare our hearts in advance like we discussed before in our Bible Studies, there will be times when we reach the end of the day and we just can’t shake how hurt we are.

In the past, this is when I would turn to and, unfortunately, misuse Ephesians 4:26-27. It was so convenient to pull that passage out when someone wanted to go to bed and I still wanted to talk about whatever was causing a conflict.

Oh no, you can’t call timeout right now. We have to keep talking because the Bible clearly says, ‘do not let the sun go down on your anger.'”

But I noticed recently the first three (3) words say, “in your anger.” So, it isn’t about resolving al relational issues before 9:00 pm. It’s talking about our anger, not our frustration.

It’s like the writer of Ephesians, Paul, is saying, “You’ve got to deal with this anger. Don’t lay in your bed and let it consume your mind. If it does, it will come out of your mouth and reveal who or what is mastering you.”

When I looked for the very first time “anger” is mentioned in the Bible, I found myself in Genesis 4:2-8 where we encounter the first relational conflict in Scripture in the story of Cain and Abel.

I’ve known the story of these two brothers for years, but I missed a really important detail. In between Cain getting angry about God not accepting his offering and killing his brother, the Lord came and talked with him. The Lord Himself, said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” (Genesis 4:6-7)

And suddenly, it’s not so much a story about Cain and Abel; God is speaking to me. He’s showing me that what I let consume my mind, makes it way out through my mouth, revealing the real source of what’s driving my decisions.

Here’s where we see this in the story of Cain and Abel:

  • Mind: Cain refused to humble himself and allowed this anger to fester inside him.
  • Mouth: Cain was not willing to let forgiveness spill from his lips.
  • What ruled him: The sin that was crouching at his door deeply ruled over him, so much that he killed his brother. He gave his feelings the right to dictate his actions, even after God came and talked with him.

What a powerful reminder to not let anger and frustration run rampart through our thoughts. It’s not worthy to lose our energy through anger and/or bad temper. We need energy and good health.

It’s hard when the hurt is so fresh or the frustration is so ongoing. But isn’t God so gracious that He gives us these verses in Ephesians and ties this lesson to something we get to see every night? As the sun is going down, we can remember it’s time to pause and let God tend to any strong or potentially damaging reactions to hurts that could consume us.

You all can pray after me, “Father God, we need Your forgiveness to flow to us and through us right now so Your Holy Spirit can work in us and sweep our heart clean.” This doesn’t make light of or deny our hurt; it puts it in the hands of God so He can help us better process it. Amen!

We may response in these ways by answering these questions:

  • While most people would never go as far as Cain did, what could be some of the devastating outcomes of refusing to allow God to address our feelings of anger and unforgiveness?
  • What are some healthy ways we can process the strong emotions that get stirred up when we’re hurt?

I suggest and recommend to look for the answers in the Bible and ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand His Words. Amen!
