33. Health Benefits of Prayer

Source: Psychooncology – A study of 222 men at the University of California, Los Angeles, found that religious conviction and practice significantly reduced the negative impact of prostate cancer. Since the disease most often progresses very slowly, improving patient’s quality of life is extremely important.

Researchers found that religious patients were in better physical and mental health and experienced less decrease in sexual function and fewer urinary problems.

Spiritually: The Bible New Living Translation (NLT) Proverbs 14:30 NLT stated,1 A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones.”

Life Application: iLumina Bible Studies – There is always a price for growth and accomplishment (Proverbs 14:4). The prudent man does not walk blindly but carefully considers his steps and chooses his way (Proverbs 14:8). There is a way that seems to be ethically correct, but it leads to destruction (Proverbs 14:12). Wisdom generally does result in greater economic stability because financial entanglements (Proverbs 6:1-5) are avoided (Proverbs 14:24). The “life-giving fountain” (Proverbs 14:27) is a source of spiritual vitality. The righteous have an eternal hope in contrast to the wicked, who can expect only humiliation and judgment (Proverbs 14:32). The fool boasts of what little knowledge he has, while the wise man avoids making a display of himself (Proverbs 14:33).

A sound heart is the life of the flesh – both literally and figuratively. A sound heart stands against psychosomatic illness as well as preserving against the ill effects of evil passions on health.
